Kipyego Breaks Winter Track Records

January 6, 2020

Darius Kipyego is having a very strong start to the indoor track season. On December 14 at Boston University’s Mini Meet, the junior posted a 1:52.55 time in the 800-meter--not only a personal best, but a new indoor state record. Two weeks later at the Boston Holiday Challenge, Darius finished the 600-meter with a 1:19.65, breaking the Rhode Island state indoor record set two years ago and clocking the fastest time in the country.

Local online publication MileSplit Rhode Island summed up his performance: “Within 13 days, he produced two Rhode Island state records, two U.S. No. 1s and the No. 23 best performance at 600 meters all-time. Not bad.”

Darius is coming off of an equally strong cross country season, in which he finished first in the Class C 5K, helping Saint Raphael Academy to win the championship, then placed 16th in New England Cross-Country Championship Meet. He earned All-New England and First Team All-State recognition for the season.

Over the summer, Darius competed in the Pan-American U20 Championships in Costa Rica and ran 1:49.46 in the 800-meter, earning a silver medal and setting a record for the second-fastest time for a high school sophomore in that event.
