Saint Raphael Academy Welcome to the Saints family. Welcome home.

Kipyego Invited to Compete in Prestigious NY Race

February 7, 2019

Saints' indoor track runner Darius Kipyego is one of six boys from Rhode Island invited to participate in the 112th Millrose Games this Saturday, February 9. One of indoor track and field’s most prestigious races, the Millrose Games invites national and international athletes from school and club organizations to run, and many Millrose champions have become Olympic champions as well.

Kipyego was invited to run after setting the state record for the 800-meter in December at the Boston University Mini Meet with a time of 1:53.71, winning by nearly 2 seconds over the next finisher. The sophomore also has the lead time in the 600-meter with a 1:21.50, set on January 11 at the Yale Track Classic. Saints has not had a student invited to run since 1989.

“Darius is a very special athlete with natural athletic ability and an outstanding work ethic. The opportunity to represent Saint Raphael Academy in front of a sold-out crowd at New York City’s Armory Track is very exciting,” said head coach Chris Magill.

The meet will be at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory in Washington Heights, NY. USATF.TV will livestream the event from 11:30 am to 4 pm and NBC Sports will televise it from 4:30 pm to 6 pm. Kipyego will run the High School Boys Sterling Affair Invitational 600-Meter Dash just after 3 pm. Follow along with the results here.
