Fall Sports Nothing Short of Amazing

November 14, 2018

The Saint Raphael Academy fall sports teams had impressive seasons this year – most competing in post-season play. We are very proud of our scholar athletes! Here is a season at a glance:

Boys Soccer

The boys soccer team had 16-0-1 record overall, placing them first in Division III, but suffered a heartbreaking loss in this weekend's Division final against Pilgrim. Seniors Joseph Majkut, Cano Morales, Nathaniel Mottur, Hector Padilla, Maximiliano Rodriguez-Cepparo, Blaze Salako, Benjamin Senra and Pablo Uribe all contributed to the winning season. The team progressed to the finals last year as well, and has also been a past recipient of the National High School Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) High School Team Academic Award.

Boys and Girls Cross Country

The boys cross country team continued a strong trend in running from last spring’s outdoor track season. The boys cross country overall record was 8-2-0, which put them in a three-way tie with Portsmouth and Barrington for second place in the Metropolitan Division. Seniors on the team are John deAbreu, Ryan Deschene, Benjamin Dube and Reilly Johnston.

The team finished 11th in the state meet, which was their highest finish since 2001. Nasavell Medeiros and Johnston finished 14th and 15th, respectively, and both earned All-State honors for their efforts. Next across the finish line for Saints was All-Division and All-Class runner Darius Kipyego in 32nd place. Johnston, Deschene and deAbreu were also named to the Academic All-State list.

While the girls cross country team's overall record was 3-7-1, placing them 9th in the Metropolitan Division, the standout of the season was sophomore Rachael Mongeau, who ran to a 7th place finish in States that earned her First Team All-State, a feat that has not be done by a Saints runner since the 1990s. Molly DeAngelis is the team’s only departing senior.

Girls Tennis

Girls tennis had an outstanding year, placing third in Division III, with a 13-2-0 overall record. While they were knocked out of the semifinals to No. 2-ranked Tiverton, the team had its best season since 2004 and it was their first time in the playoffs in three years. The senior-heavy team includes Faith Alves, Morgan Collins, Samantha Fernandez, Emily Fournier, Molly Frazier, Serena-Rose Gaskin, Jillian Hughes, Emma McDonough, and Lauren Racine.

Girls Volleyball

Girls volleyball ended its regular season with 15-2-0 overall record, placing first in the D-III-A bracket, the first time is Saints history. Seasoned senior players Beatriz Almeida, Sydney Charette, Sierra Gonzalez, Korto Jackson, Isabelle Lucca and Montana Sisson had strong performances on the court. The team earned a bye week in the quarterfinals and will head straight to semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 15, to take on Shea at 6 pm at home.

Football

The Saints football team has won the Rhode Island Football Officials Sportsmanship Award for the 2018 season. The award is named after Richard (Dick) Reynolds, a former Providence Journal sports writer, and will be presented to the team at a banquet next month.

The Reynolds Award is a sportsmanship award given to a Rhode Island high school football team voted on by the Rhode Island Football Officials. After each game, officials rate each team, coaching staff, and fans on their sportsmanship during the game. Based on a weekly point system, the scores are tallied and the team with the highest number of points is awarded the Richard (Dick) Reynolds Sportsmanship Award.

Football Cheer

Football Cheerleading participated in the Inaugural “Celebrate Spirit” Game Day Competition in October and earned first-place accolades out of 10 teams in the non-tumble division. Seniors Alexis Washington, Jasmyn Renzi, Melissa Munoz, and Taylor Troiano led the team in the win.
